Importance of Sunglasses: Six Things to Consider

Thursday, June 27th, 2019

Whether you are on the road or on the water, everyone knows sunglasses make it easier to see on a sunny day. Not only are sunglasses another fun accessory to express your style, they are a great defense against ultraviolet (UV) rays which can really damage your eyes, both short-term and long-term. When purchasing your next pair, there is more to consider than just the shape and style of the frames! Here are six tips to keep in mind:

  • Accept nothing but 100%!The most important thing to look for is the sticker on the frame (or bullet point in the description – if purchasing online) indicating the pair of sunnies block 100% of UV rays.
  • Bigger is best! The more coverage from sunglasses, the less damage caused to the eyes. Oversized glasses or a wraparound-style cut down on the UV rays entering the eye from the side.
  • Just because the lenses are darker, doesn’t mean they are more protective. While darker lenses may look cooler, they do not necessarily block more UV rays.
  • The color of the lens doesn’t matter. These days, the lens of sunglasses come in a variety of colors.
  • Polarized lenses cut glare, not UV rays.A common misconception is that polarized lenses protect your eyes from the sun. This is half-way true. Polarization reduces the glare coming off reflective surfaces like water or pavement. However, it does not offer more protection from the sun.
  • More expensive, doesn’t always mean better. In order to do their job, your sunglasses don’t have to break the bank. Less expensive pairs marked as 100% UV-blocking are just as protective as the pricier ones.
