Hill Jackson – Seeing the World in a Whole New Light After Cataract Surgery

Wednesday, October 12th, 2016

hill-judge-jackson-jr-maintenance-superintendent-233x35081-year-old Valdosta resident Hill Jackson had become resigned to the fact that his eyesight just wasn’t what it used to be.  Needing eye glasses for even the most common of everyday chores was just a way of life for him.  Hill finally went to see Dr. Scott Petermann at South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners, and it was confirmed that his vision was even worse than he thought.  Hill had advanced cataracts in both eyes, and Dr. Petermann recommended surgery.

In short, Laser-Assisted Cataract surgery changed Hill’s life.  Little things like picking up the telephone book and being able to look up listings without reading glasses became possible again.  He says, “I can see real, real good now.  I haven’t picked up my glasses once since I had the surgery.”

After retiring from the Air Force, Hill became a Maintenance Superintendent for the Valdosta Housing Authority.  He oversees 546 properties, and good eyesight is key to his daily work.  Hill has a passion assisting people with the best living conditions possible.

When Hill isn’t hard at work at V.H.A., he loves to work in his yard – cutting grass, trimming trees…all things that are made so much more enjoyable with better vision.

Cataracts, the leading cause of preventable blindness, develop when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy which impairs vision.  Surgery to remove the old lens and replace it with a new, clear lens is an effective method for improving poor eyesight due to cataract development.

South Georgia Eye Partners’ own Dr. Scott Petermann performs LenSx® – a blade-free, laser-assisted cataract surgery which is the latest in cataract correction procedures.

SGEP performs cataract surgery with LenSx® as an outpatient procedure at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta.  Pre-op and post-op visits for South Georgia Eye Partners patients can be scheduled in Valdosta, Tifton, and Douglas.  Our South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners patients can schedule their visits at our Madison location.  To learn more, click here.

lynnIf you are considering cataract surgery, you should read this article (and click “Read more”) to learn about another of our amazing patients, Lynn Chaney – through her own words and video – and how Laser-Assisted Cataract surgery changed her life.

In Lynn’s words, she says her reaction the morning after her surgery was this:  “There’s no way to explain it.  Everything’s so bright and so clear!”  Riding her Harley Davidson with her husband, Leon, is Lynn’s passion – now she can see everything during their rides so much clearer…without glasses. Laser-assisted cataract surgery with multi focal lens changed her world.  To watch Lynn’s video – along with many of our other LAC and traditional cataract surgery patients – click here.

Cataract Surgery: Meet Peggy Clements

Friday, August 26th, 2016

2A1C4524Considering cataract surgery?  Have a talk with Peggy Clements, and you’ll probably be convinced to go for it.  After having cataract surgery performed by South Georgia Eye Partners’ Dr. Wes Ross, Peggy is now doing some of her favorite things – without the use of eye glasses or contacts!

Peggy, a Tifton native, started experiencing blurry vision – and her cataracts came on her quickly.  Some of the things she loved doing most were becoming more difficult – even with her glasses.  Making pancakes with her grandsons, reading the Bible, and birdwatching all became less and less enjoyable.  When she had her consultation with Dr. Ross and he diagnosed her with cataracts, they made a plan to proceed with surgery.

During traditional cataract surgery, Dr. Ross uses surgical blades to manually remove the clouded lens and replace it with a new lens for clearer vision. In conjunction with traditional surgery, just like with LenSx®,  Dr. Petermann and Dr. Ross can use special lenses such as the ReSTOR® and Crystalens® to help with distance, near and intermediate vision. They can also use techniques and lenses to eliminate astigmatism and help patients achieve greater spectacle independence.

After surgery, Peggy can see everything much more clearly.  She even threaded a needle the other day!  Her world has become much brighter.  If you’re experiencing blurry vision and think you may be developing or have cataracts, give us a call for a consultation.  It could change your quality of life!

SGEP’s Ophthalmologists Provide Innovative Eye Care Close to Home

Thursday, July 14th, 2016

Edit-153We depend on our eyesight for almost everything we do…every day.  When our vision is compromised – for any number of reasons – it can have a detrimental effect on our quality of life.

We realize that choosing a physician is an extremely important decision, and South Georgia Eye Partners’ ophthalmologists Dr. Scott Petermann and Dr. Wes Ross are trained to deliver the latest in eye care technology.  These two SGEP physicians are both board certified in ophthalmology.  Dr. Petermann graduated from medical school at Wake Forest University and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Emory University in Atlanta.  Dr. Ross, after graduating from medical school at Mercer University in Macon, completed his residency at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.  From iLASIK surgery to the newest procedures in correcting cataracts, Drs. Petermann and Ross are experts in their field and are proud to provide the region’s most comprehensive and first rate care to their patients.

South Georgia Eye Partners are committed to bringing the most advanced surgical capabilities to their patients.  iLASIK is the latest in laser vision correction technology. For people who have refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, iLASIK surgery could be the solution.  The latest in laservision correction technology, iLASIK (laster-assisted in situ keratomileusis), uses a laser to cut the corneal flap instead of a traditional blade.  It is safer, more precise and a more comfortable way to perform laser vision correction. Benefits include a more customized flap, a reduced risk of infection and dry eye, and faster healing time.  Both Dr. Petermann and Dr. Ross have extensive experience in iLASIK surgery and have helped thousands of people get rid of their need for glasses.

In addition to iLASIK, Dr. Petermann and Dr. Ross are well-qualified and have vast experience in the most current solutions to cataracts.  Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness, and they develop when the eyes’ lens becomes cloudy which impairs vision.  Surgery to remove the old lens and replace it with a new, clear lens is an effective method for improving poor eyesight due to cataract development.

South Georgia Eye Partners’ Dr. Scott Petermann and Dr. Wes Ross perform LenSx® – a blade-free, laser-assisted cataract surgery which is the latest in cataract correction procedures.

“Bringing the laser to Valdosta was a personal mission of mine.  I believe it is my responsibility to provide my patients with the latest technology in eye care.   Close to 900 of my patients have benefited from laser assisted cataract surgery over the past 24 months,” says Dr. Petermann.

This technology is an advanced alternative to traditional cataract surgery, which utilizes surgical blades.  LenSx® provides the surgeon with micron-level precision and improved predictability.  The procedure is tailored to the surgeon’s specifications and delivers a remarkable degree of accuracy.  By creating the incisions and fragmenting the clouded lens with LenSx®, the surgeon creates a precise opening for the new lens to be optimally positioned.

SGEP performs both iLASIK surgery and cataract surgery with LenSx® as an outpatient procedure.  Pre-op and post-op visits for South Georgia Eye Partners patients can be scheduled in Valdosta, Tifton, Douglas, and Madison.  Call us today to make an appointment for a consultation – both Dr. Petermann and Dr. Ross are available to answer any questions or concerns.  The results could be life-changing.

Insurance

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Vision insurance vs. medical insurance.  Many people may not realize that when they come to an eye doctor their visit may or may not be considered routine.  With that being said, if it is routine with a diagnosis of myopia, presbyopia, etc., it is considered routine. If it is conjunctivitis, diabetes, macular degeneration, cataracts, etc., it is considered medical and may be filed medically and not routine.  Some medical plans include vision coverage and others have separate vision plans.  Either way, it is always a great idea to have information for both when making an appointment even if you are having a Lasik Consult.

Survey Says……

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Many Americans Miss the Mark on Eye Exams.

A recent survey of 1,000 adults shows that nearly half — 47% — worry more about losing their sight than about losing their memory and their ability to walk or hear. But almost 30% indicated that they don’t get their eyes checked. Many Americans are unaware of the warning signs of eye diseases and conditions that could cause damage and blindness if not detected and treated soon enough.

It’s necessary to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist regularly in order to keep your eyes in good working order. Diseases and conditions of the eye can often be treated successfully if caught early. Eye professionals recommend that everyone see an eye doctor at least every two years. Many people should see their eye doctors more often. According to the American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, factors such as age, eye health and family health history determine how often one should have a complete eye exam.

Call today to schedule your annual eye exam.
