Dr. Eric Kolisz: Focus on Cataract Care

Wednesday, April 4th, 2018

Most people over 65 have some degree of cataract development. A cataract is the gradual clouding of the natural lens that is inside your eye.  In order for the eye to work properly, it needs a clear lens to focus light on the retina.  South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners  is committed to keeping our patients educated about early detection, treatment and available corrective surgeries when it comes to cataracts. In speaking with our own Dr. Eric Kolisz, we find out about Eye Partners’ approach to caring for our patients with this issue.

“Our doctors and staff do an excellent job of taking the time to communicate properly with our patients prior to their cataract surgery,” says Dr. Kolisz. “People do not like surprises when it comes to surgery on the eye.  When they know what to expect with regard to surgery day, post-surgical care and expected outcomes of the surgery, that patient tends to be much happier.”

Cataracts, the leading cause of preventable blindness, develop when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy which impairs vision.  Surgery to remove the old lens and replace it with a new, clear lens is an effective method for improving poor eyesight due to cataract development.

Eye Partners now performs LenSx® – a blade-free, laser-assisted cataract surgery.

This new technology is an advanced alternative to traditional cataract surgery, which utilizes surgical blades.  LenSx® provides the surgeon with micron-level precision and improved predictability.  The procedure is tailored to the surgeon’s specifications and delivers a remarkable degree of accuracy.  By creating the incisions and fragmenting the clouded lens with LenSx®, the surgeon creates a precise opening for the new lens to be optimally positioned.

“Taking care of Eye Partners’ patients after cataract surgery is a breeze these days,” continues Dr. Kolisz.  “The combination  of our experienced surgeons’ abilities, our staff and the fact we have at our disposal all the latest and greatest technology, results in post surgical patients who are very happy.”

In conclusion, Dr. Kolisz says, “We communicate well with our patients then we meet and often exceed their expectations. That is fun for me to be part of!”

Eye Partners performs cataract surgery with LenSx® as an outpatient procedure at our state-of-the-art surgery center in Valdosta.  Pre-op and post-op visits for Eye Partners patients can be scheduled in Valdosta, Tifton, Moultrie, Douglas, and Madison, FL. To learn more, click here.

South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners: Leaders in Eye Care Innovation & Technology

Monday, January 22nd, 2018

Delivering the latest eye care technology to our patients is important to the physicians at South Georgia / North Florida Eye Partners.  Our new ORA System with VerifEye+ Technology, is a new technology addition that assists physicians during cataract surgery by allowing them to obtain real-time, precise measurements of the eye during the actual procedure.  While measurements have always been, and still are, taken before cataract surgery, the exactness and verification this tool delivers in the surgery suite just prior to the procedure gives valuable data to the surgeon.

“The ORA System with VerifEYE+ Technology provides a continuous assessment of a patient’s eye throughout the entire procedure, giving precise measurements to me or one of our other surgeons in one-degree increments,” said Dr. Scott Petermann. “There has never been a more individualized and accurate tool in assisting with cataract surgery.”

We are happy to be bringing this technology to our patients in South Georgia and North Florida who would otherwise have to travel a much greater distance. Our goal is to provide patients with the best care close to home.  Eye Partners’ team of ophthalmologists, Dr. Scott Petermann, Dr. Wes Ross, and Dr. Garrett Webster who is joining our practice in July, perform both laser-assisted and traditional cataract surgery at our state-of-the-art surgery center in Valdosta.  Pre-op and post-op visits for our patients can be scheduled at any of our locations: Tifton, Valdosta, Douglas, Moultrie, and Madison, FL.  Call us today to schedule an appointment with one of our physicians to see if cataract surgery is right for you.

After graduating from Valdosta State University, Dr. Ross got a job filing charts with Dr. Scott Petermann.  Up until that point, Ross didn’t have that much of an interest in ophthalmology, but after being in that environment and seeing the difference that optometrists and ophthalmologists made in patients’ lives, he had a change of heart.  Dr. Ross is now an accomplished ophthalmologist with South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners and specializes in comprehensive ophthalmology with an emphasis in cataract and refractive surgery.  Dr. Ross performs iLASIK surgery as well.

Hill Jackson – Seeing the World in a Whole New Light After Cataract Surgery

Wednesday, October 12th, 2016

hill-judge-jackson-jr-maintenance-superintendent-233x35081-year-old Valdosta resident Hill Jackson had become resigned to the fact that his eyesight just wasn’t what it used to be.  Needing eye glasses for even the most common of everyday chores was just a way of life for him.  Hill finally went to see Dr. Scott Petermann at South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners, and it was confirmed that his vision was even worse than he thought.  Hill had advanced cataracts in both eyes, and Dr. Petermann recommended surgery.

In short, Laser-Assisted Cataract surgery changed Hill’s life.  Little things like picking up the telephone book and being able to look up listings without reading glasses became possible again.  He says, “I can see real, real good now.  I haven’t picked up my glasses once since I had the surgery.”

After retiring from the Air Force, Hill became a Maintenance Superintendent for the Valdosta Housing Authority.  He oversees 546 properties, and good eyesight is key to his daily work.  Hill has a passion assisting people with the best living conditions possible.

When Hill isn’t hard at work at V.H.A., he loves to work in his yard – cutting grass, trimming trees…all things that are made so much more enjoyable with better vision.

Meet Charles Jarrell – A Patient Testimonial on LAC Surgery at SGEP

Monday, August 15th, 2016

IMG_8609No one tells our story quite like our patients.  At South Georgia Eye Partners, we value each and every person that walks through our doors – and when we are able to give our patients the gift of better vision, that’s a good day for everyone.

Charles Jarrell, a Laser Assisted Cataract surgery patient of Dr. Scott Petermann’s – and someone whose beloved profession requires a lot of driving – wrote to tell us what a difference this procedure made in his life.  We are honored to have helped improve Mr. Jarrell’s quality of life.  Here’s his story, in his own words:

“Dear Dr. Petermann:
I would have never believed the difference the cataract eye surgery has made in my life.  I am totally amazed.
I have always had to wear glasses to watch TV on my 42” screen.  After surgery that same morning, I sat down to enjoy “Out Numbered” on the Fox Channel.  I could not see; it was blurry.  I removed my glasses while getting up and totally blown away.  I could clearly see the TV screen.  I took it a step farther and went to the TV Guide channel; I could read.  No more glasses!!!!
Why am I writing you?  I am 74 years old and plan to work as long as my health holds out.  I do not have to work; I work because of the enjoyment it brings me.  I work with hospitals, colleges and universities and school systems in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.  I travel about 60,000 miles annually.
The next day after surgery, I had to drive to Thomasville for a meeting at a college. I was blown away once again because I could drive without my glasses.  The colors were so vivid.  The sky was bluer and the trees greener.
Due to my heavy travel schedule, it requires driving in the dark and in the early morning and at night.  For the past two years, I have had trouble driving when it was dark.  It was getting to the place where I waited until daylight to drive.  That really bothered me.  Due to the eye surgery, I do not have that problem anymore.
I want to commend you and your staff on the great customer service at South Georgia Eye Partners; it is tremendous.  I was taken in for my appointment without waiting.  Your staff is excellent.  They put you at ease and are very informative.  I will give you and everyone there an A+ rating and will highly recommend your services to anyone.
Respectfully,
Charles D. Jarrell
Management Consultant”
If you have been considering cataract surgery, please call SGEP to make an appointment today.  We would love to help you as much as we helped Charles.  And we appreciate the time Mr. Jarrell took to let us know that we are continuing to better the lives of our patients.

SGEP’s Ophthalmologists Provide Innovative Eye Care Close to Home

Thursday, July 14th, 2016

Edit-153We depend on our eyesight for almost everything we do…every day.  When our vision is compromised – for any number of reasons – it can have a detrimental effect on our quality of life.

We realize that choosing a physician is an extremely important decision, and South Georgia Eye Partners’ ophthalmologists Dr. Scott Petermann and Dr. Wes Ross are trained to deliver the latest in eye care technology.  These two SGEP physicians are both board certified in ophthalmology.  Dr. Petermann graduated from medical school at Wake Forest University and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Emory University in Atlanta.  Dr. Ross, after graduating from medical school at Mercer University in Macon, completed his residency at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.  From iLASIK surgery to the newest procedures in correcting cataracts, Drs. Petermann and Ross are experts in their field and are proud to provide the region’s most comprehensive and first rate care to their patients.

South Georgia Eye Partners are committed to bringing the most advanced surgical capabilities to their patients.  iLASIK is the latest in laser vision correction technology. For people who have refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, iLASIK surgery could be the solution.  The latest in laservision correction technology, iLASIK (laster-assisted in situ keratomileusis), uses a laser to cut the corneal flap instead of a traditional blade.  It is safer, more precise and a more comfortable way to perform laser vision correction. Benefits include a more customized flap, a reduced risk of infection and dry eye, and faster healing time.  Both Dr. Petermann and Dr. Ross have extensive experience in iLASIK surgery and have helped thousands of people get rid of their need for glasses.

In addition to iLASIK, Dr. Petermann and Dr. Ross are well-qualified and have vast experience in the most current solutions to cataracts.  Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness, and they develop when the eyes’ lens becomes cloudy which impairs vision.  Surgery to remove the old lens and replace it with a new, clear lens is an effective method for improving poor eyesight due to cataract development.

South Georgia Eye Partners’ Dr. Scott Petermann and Dr. Wes Ross perform LenSx® – a blade-free, laser-assisted cataract surgery which is the latest in cataract correction procedures.

“Bringing the laser to Valdosta was a personal mission of mine.  I believe it is my responsibility to provide my patients with the latest technology in eye care.   Close to 900 of my patients have benefited from laser assisted cataract surgery over the past 24 months,” says Dr. Petermann.

This technology is an advanced alternative to traditional cataract surgery, which utilizes surgical blades.

SGEP performs both iLASIK surgery and cataract surgery with LenSx® as an outpatient procedure.  Pre-op and post-op visits for South Georgia Eye Partners patients can be scheduled in Valdosta, Tifton, Douglas, and Madison.  Call us today to make an appointment for a consultation – both Dr. Petermann and Dr. Ross are available to answer any questions or concerns.  The results could be life-changing.
