Eye Care for the Entire Family

Wednesday, May 15th, 2019

Regardless of your age or physical health, it’s important to have regular eye exams. South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners provides vision care for the entire family – toddlers to seniors.

During a complete eye exam, your eye doctor will not only determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, but will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

A comprehensive eye exam includes a number of tests and procedures to examine and evaluate the health of your eyes and the quality of your vision. These tests range from simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using a high-powered lens to examine the health of the tissues inside of your eyes.

Eye care experts recommend you have a complete eye exam every year to assess your risk for potentially damaging eye conditions, as well as to keep on top of any changes in vision you may be experiencing.

Children. Some experts estimate that approximately 5% to 10% of pre-schoolers and 25% of school-aged children have vision problems. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), all children should have their eyes examined at 6 months of age, at age 3 and again at the start of school. Children without vision problems or risk factors for eye or vision problems should then continue to have their eyes examined at every year throughout school.

Children with existing vision problems or risk factors should have their eyes examined more frequently. Common risk factors for vision problems include:

  • premature birth
  • developmental delays
  • turned or crossed eyes
  • family history of eye disease
  • history of eye injury
  • other physical illness or disease

The AOA recommends that children who wear eyeglasses or contact lenses should have their eyes examined at least every 12 months or according to their eye doctor’s instructions.

Adults. The AOA also recommends an annual eye exam for any adult who wears eyeglasses or contacts. If you don’t normally need vision correction, you still need an eye exam every year. Doctors often recommend more frequent examinations for adults with diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders, because many diseases can have an impact on vision and eye health.

If you are over 40, it’s a good idea to have your eyes examined every one to two years to check for common age-related eye problems such as presbyopia, cataracts and macular degeneration. Read more about Vision after 40.

Because the risk of eye disease continues to increase with advancing age, everyone over the age of 60 should be examined annually. Read more about Vision after 60.

Call South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners today to schedule an appointment for all the members of your family.  Preventative vision care is the key to seeing well for years to come.

Over 40? Your Eyes are Changing…

Thursday, April 4th, 2019

If you are over 40 years of age, you’ve probably noticed changes in your vision. Difficulty seeing clearly for reading and close work are among the most common problems adults develop between ages 41 to 60. However, this is also the time when other changes in your eyes can start to affect your work and enjoyment of life.  Keep reading, and if you are experiencing any of these issues, call South Georgia/ North Florida Eye today for an appointment.  We can help your eyes age gracefully.

Beginning in the early to mid-forties, most adults may start to experience problems with their ability to see clearly at close distances, especially for reading and computer tasks. This normal aging change in the eye’s focusing ability, called presbyopia, will continue to progress over time.

Many people in middle age begin to experience difficulty with their vision.

Initially, you may find you need to hold reading materials farther away to see them clearly. Print in the newspaper or on a restaurant menu may appear blurred, especially under dim lighting. If you already wear prescription glasses or contact lenses to see clearly in the distance, the near vision changes caused by presbyopia can bring about the need to use bifocal or multifocal lenses. If you are nearsighted, you may have discovered that you now need to remove your glasses to see better up close. Fortunately, people with presbyopia now have many options to improve their ability to see well.

Along with the onset of presbyopia, an increase in the incidence of eye health problems occurs during these years. Whether or not there is a need for eyeglasses, adults should be examined for signs of developing eye and vision problems. A comprehensive eye examination is recommended at least every two years. Don’t rely on an insufficient substitute like the limited driver’s license vision test or other vision screenings to determine if you have an eye or vision problem.

Adults over 40 may be particularly at risk for the development of eye and vision problems if any of the following exist:

  • Chronic, systemic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • A family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration.
  • A highly visually demanding job or work in an eye-hazardous occupation.
  • Health conditions like high cholesterol, thyroid conditions, anxiety or depression, and arthritis for which you take medications. Many medications, even antihistamines, have ocular side-effects.

Call us today you are just beginning to experience some of these problems or even if you’ve been struggling with them for awhile.  Eye Partners’ board certified ophthalmologists and optometrists are here to help.

Optomap: Seeing the Future with Early Detection

Tuesday, March 12th, 2019

What is optomap? Simply put, an optomap ultra-widefield retinal image is a unique technology that captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic photo which can help with early detection of everything from vision impairment to life-threatening diseases.

The unique optomap view helps your eye care practitioner detect early signs of retinal disease more effectively and efficiently than with traditional eye exams. Early detection means successful treatments can be administered and this reduces the risk to your sight and health.

View Video

The actual optomap exam, which we perform at all five our Eye Partners offices, is fast, painless and comfortable. Nothing touches your eye at any time, and it is suitable for the whole family. To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time (much like looking into a keyhole), and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken.

Under normal circumstances, dilation drops are not usually necessary, but depending upon your condition, your South Georgia/North Florida Eye Partners eye care professional may decide to dilate. The capture takes less than a second, and the results are available for review immediately. You see exactly what your doctor sees – even in a 3D animation.

Eye Partners is proud to provide optomap technology – early detection is key to so many health issues; not just vision problems. Besides protection from vision impairment or blindness, the optomap test can lead to early detection of cancer, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Call Eye Partners today to set up your eye care exam and optomap imaging. We look forward to helping you see the future today!

Help for Dry Eye Syndrome Close to Home!

Tuesday, March 5th, 2019

One of the most common clinical challenges faced in eye care is dry eye syndrome. Characterized by irritated, scratchy, itchy eyes, dry eye occurs when eyes are not properly lubricated because of insufficient tear production, or unbalanced tear composition. Thanks to new technology, dry eye can now be treated in ways never before available. The latest diagnostic tool – The TearLab Osmolarity System – measures tear osmolarity by taking a small sample of the patient’s tears to see how “dry” they really are. Treatment is then prescribed based on the measurements from the TearLab and range from Omega 3 supplements, tear replacement drops, punctual plugs, anti- inflammatory drops, oral antibiotics and prescription strength artificial tears.

If you are ready to address your dry eye problems, Eye Partners has five convenient locations in Valdosta, Tifton, Douglas, Moultrie and Madison, FL  Read more about our Dry Eye Clinic here. Contact us today to make an appointment.
